Career Compass: Don't let peer pressure compromise safe-lifting practices

Source: RN

My coworkers get frustrated with my insistence on using lifting equipment to transfer patients. I'm afraid of getting hurt, but I am also afraid of peer pressure.

DON'T BEND YOUR safety standards to the peer pressure around you. The average adult woman can safely lift approximately 40 pounds, and Australian officials estimate the average nurse could be expected to lift a total of 1.8 tons during the course of an average day. Use your critical-thinking skills to make safe choices, as they will protect you, your patient, and your rushed coworkers! Being proactive will give you the best chances of avoiding a back injury.
