Frequent hand washing leads to dermatitis

A new study found that almost 60% of healthcare workers who washed their hands eight times or more daily developed a reaction to soaps over a six-month period, according to a new study from University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Use of an alcohol-based cleanser, however, was not associated with dermatitis. Of the 111 healthcare workers tested, 79% used gloves and wore them approximately 3.45 hours a day. Use of gloves also was not associated with contact dermatitis, the study found.
