A recent study identifies several cost-effective ways hospitals can improve the physical environment to help heal pediatric
pa-tients. The report, from the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI), in conjunction
with the Center for Health Design, is the result of a scientific review of 320 evidence-based design studies relating to pediatrics.
Findings demonstrate that eliminating or minimizing such environmental elements as loud noise, high light levels and infectious
pathogens can contribute to better clinical, physiological, psychosocial, and safety outcomes for young patients and their
families. The study also identifies some evidence-based intervention strategies for neonatal intensive care units.
NACHRI's report prioritizes design recommendations that can be implemented at relatively low cost at any time, and those that
can be taken up during renovation or new construction. The full report was expected to be published in late May. Copies can
be ordered online at the association's Web site, http://www.childrenshospitals.net/.
